To give or receive a red envelope with “lucky money” is considered to carry boundless blessings for both the giver and receiver as it symbolizes “good fortune”. Traditionally, the notes should be new and crisp (for fresh chi) and the amount inside is usually an even number.
They come with all sorts of beautiful images and characters on them (including, believe it or not, Hello Kitty!) They should never be re-used, that’s bad luck.
Known as ang pao, hong bao or lai see (which translates into “red package”) they are given out not only during the Lunar New Year, but also for congratulations at weddings and birthdays. They are also used express appreciation for the Helpful People or Benefactors in your life.
The color red is not only lucky, it’s also a color of protection to avoid misfortune and inauspicious chi. In Feng Shui, they’re often placed in an appropriate place of the Bagua to bring positive chi for success, happiness and prosperity.
The heart and mind with which you prepare the envelopes is very important and the more thoughtful, joyful and sincere your preparations, the more you’ll receive out of it. If you prepare the envelopes with crumpled, torn, dirty money or feeling stingy that’s the chi you’re putting out. If however, you prepare them near your altar, appreciate the value for all of the Feng Shui that works and has helped transform your life and give with a full heart, you will notice a difference.
In Black Sect Tantric Buddhist Feng Shui this ancient tradition of exchanging energy and sacred wisdom is a requirement for the honoring of your teachers or consultants. When I give envelopes to my teacher, Grandmaster Lin Yun, I kneel and bow my head to show deep reverence and I feel a little teary!
These envelopes are also used to provide a blessing for you and your home or business, and for strengthening the intentions set forth during your consultation. Beautiful ceremonies will be done on your behalf—one after your consultation, the second during the Lunar New Year.
